Dallas tankless water heater repair: what you need to know

Tankless units have their own headaches: error codes, scaling, ignition failure, gas pressure issues. The plumber works on Rinnai, Navien, Rheem, Noritz, and the other major tankless brands across DFW.

Tankless water heaters are different animals than tank units. Different parts, different failure modes, different troubleshooting. Most plumbers can fix a tank in their sleep but freeze up on a tankless throwing an error code. The plumbers we dispatch know tankless. Rinnai, Navien, Rheem, Noritz, Takagi, the European brands. Error codes get diagnosed correctly the first visit, and most repairs finish the same day.

The big-three tankless issues in DFW are scaling, ignition problems, and venting. Hard water builds up in the heat exchanger faster on tankless than on tank units, which is why annual descaling matters more here than in softer-water markets. Ignition issues are usually flame rod, igniter, or gas pressure. Venting issues show up as error codes about combustion air or exhaust. None of it is mystery, but it requires a plumber who's seen tankless before.

If your tankless is past 8 years and was never descaled, the heat exchanger is the wildcard. Scale eats heat exchangers, and a heat exchanger replacement is often half the cost of a new unit. The plumber will tell you straight whether you're looking at a $300 cleaning or a $1,500 part swap, and if it's the part swap, whether replacement makes more sense.

Don't wait. Talk to a plumber now.

Is your water heater showing these signs?

Tankless symptoms are pretty consistent across brands. Here's what the plumber sees on most tankless calls in DFW.

  • Error code on the display

Most modern tankless units throw a numeric error code that maps directly to the issue. The plumber knows the codes for Rinnai, Navien, Rheem, Noritz. Diagnosis is fast.

  • No hot water or weak hot water flow

Could be a flow sensor, an igniter problem, or scaling in the heat exchanger. Usually diagnosed in 20 minutes, fixed same visit if it's parts.

  • Cold water sandwich (hot, then cold, then hot again)

Common on tankless when fixtures cycle on and off rapidly. Usually a buffer tank install fixes it. Sometimes it's a flow sensor that needs cleaning or replacement.

  • Loud whining or screeching from the unit

Often scaling vibrating against the heat exchanger walls, or a dying fan motor. Descale or fan swap.

  • Unit shuts off mid-shower

Gas pressure issue, ignition failure, or a vent obstruction. The plumber checks gas line pressure first. If pressure's fine, vent inspection. Then ignition components.

  • Unit won't ignite at all

Igniter, flame rod, or gas valve. All cheap parts, all one-visit fixes once diagnosed.

  • Water flow but no heat

Heat exchanger may be scaled or damaged. A descale often clears it. If the heat exchanger has cracks, replacement is the call.

  • Reduced flow rate from the tap

Scale buildup in the heat exchanger constricts flow. A flush and descale clears it. Should be done annually in DFW.

Whatever you've got, we handle it

The plumber works on every common setup. If yours isn't listed, call. Chances are they handle it too.

  • Rinnai

Most common tankless brand we see in DFW. Error codes well-documented, parts readily available, the plumber knows the platform cold.

  • Navien

Solid second-most-common in this market. Slightly more complex error codes, but the plumber works on Naviens regularly.

  • Rheem

Tankless lineup from a major tank brand. Common in newer DFW construction. Standard issues, standard parts.

  • Noritz, Takagi, others

European and Japanese tankless brands. Less common but the plumber handles them. May take a day longer if a specialty part is needed.

Tankless Water Heater Repair: common questions

Quick answers about service from Water Heater Pros DFW.

How long do water heaters last in DFW?

Tank water heaters last 8 to 12 years. Tankless go 15 to 20 if you flush them every year. DFW's hard water knocks 1 to 3 years off either if the unit never gets serviced. If yours is past 10 and acting up, you're better off replacing it than throwing money at repairs.

Should I repair or replace my water heater?

Under 10 years old, one failed part? Repair it. Past 10 years with the tank itself leaking, multiple repair calls, or your gas bill creeping up? Replace it. The plumber on the call will tell you straight which side you're on.

Why is my water heater making noise?

Popping or rumbling? That's sediment trapped under the heating element, flashing to steam. Real common in DFW because of the hard water. A flush usually clears it. If the noise comes with rusty water or shorter showers, the tank's probably done.

Why don't I have any hot water?

Gas unit? Probably a pilot light, thermocouple, or gas valve. Electric? Check the breaker first, then the heating element. Either way a licensed plumber can tell you in 30 minutes. Most fixes are done the same visit.

Why does my hot water smell like rotten eggs?

Sulfur bacteria reacting with the magnesium anode rod inside your tank. Swap the anode for an aluminum/zinc one and the smell usually goes away. If the cold water smells too, the problem is your water supply, not the heater.

Why is my T&P (temperature & pressure) valve leaking?

A T&P valve that drips usually means high water pressure or thermal expansion. The fix is normally an expansion tank. Leaking hard and constant? Don't touch it. That valve is the only thing keeping your tank from blowing up. Call a plumber today.

What size water heater do I need for my DFW home?

Rule of thumb: 40-gallon tank for 1 to 3 people, 50 for 3 to 4, 65 to 80 for 5 or more. Tankless is sized by gallons-per-minute, not gallons stored. The plumber will size yours based on your bathrooms, fixtures, and water temperature coming in.

How does DFW's hard water affect water heaters?

DFW water is loaded with calcium and magnesium. That stuff settles at the bottom of tank heaters and crusts up the heat exchangers in tankless units. Result: less efficiency, more popping, shorter lifespan. Flush your tank once a year. Descale your tankless once a year. Both add years.

Can I install a water heater myself?

Don't. Texas requires a licensed plumber for water heater installs, and most DFW cities require a pulled permit too. DIY voids your home insurance and fails inspection at resale. For gas units it's genuinely dangerous. The few hundred bucks you save isn't worth the risk.
